Types of Attic Insulation

Properly insulated attics can reduce your home energy costs and take the pressure off of your heating and cooling systems. But the type of insulation you choose and how much you need will depend on where you live and your home’s age.

Different types of insulation come in a range of R-values, with higher ratings providing better insulating power. The Department of Energy recommends an R-30 rating or greater for most homes in the United States, and higher R-values are needed for colder climates.

The most common attic insulation is fiberglass batt or blanket insulation, which consists of large rolls or sheets of fibers, usually fiberglass but sometimes cotton or mineral wool. This insulation is often precut to fit between attic joists or rafters. It can also be blown into place using a special machine.

Spray foam insulation is another option for attic insulation and comes in a variety of R-values. This insulation is thicker than fiberglass batts or blankets and forms a tight seal to prevent air leaks. It is also fire-resistant, which adds to its safety and durability. Spray foam insulation is a good choice for attics with high moisture or pest control issues, but it requires professional installation and can be expensive.

Other types of attic insulation include rigid foam panels or boards made from polystyrene, polyisocyanurate, or other materials, which are cut to size and installed on the attic floor. These are cost-effective and provide high R-values. They are durable and resistant to compression, but may require a wood frame in some applications.
